As a Photojournalist
IMAGES FROM THE FOURTH ESTATE
Half of the American people have never read a newspaper. Half never voted for President. One hopes it is the same half.
- Gore Vidal
Will attended Metropolitan State University (Metro) in Denver, Colorado and graduated in 2006 with a degree in Journalism with an emphasis in Photojournalism. While attending Metro, he performed internships at a number of newspapers across the country, including The Oklahoman in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the Flint Journal in Flint, Michigan, The Saginaw News in Saginaw, Michigan, and the Boston Globe in Boston, Massachusetts.
After graduating, he went to work in Fayetteville, Arkansas for the Morning News and later the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. The Morning News focused on Northwest Arkansas with separate editions for local communities such as Bentonville, Springdale, and Rogers. The Arkansas Democrat Gazette is the paper of record for the State of Arkansas out of Little Rock and also publishes a separate edition for Northwest Arkansas. While Will primarily provided photo coverage for the Northwest edition, many of his photos were also published in the main state-wide edition of the Democrat Gazette.
As is evidenced by the photos in this page, Will's assignments gave him exposure to a wide range of stories and events not often experienced in the course of a lifetime. They included presidential visits, storm disasters, major sporting events, and intimate personal experiences.
Will's employment in the industry and association with fellow employees from management on down provided an insiders view of the status of newspapers in the internet age. He recognized that opportunities for photojournalists were diminishing as were the financial rewards. Accordingly, he recently completed a bachelor's degree in Natural Resources Management from Oregon State University and is pursuing a career in that field. Perhaps that career will present further opportunities to apply his photographic and journalistic skills.
Awards
In the course of his photojournalism experience, Will was recognized for his skills in several ways. He was selected as the Boston Globe's top intern for the period of internship that he spent there.
He was also recognized for his photography while working for the Morning News in Fayettville, Arkansas:
Portfolio
This is a portion of a Personal Portfolio that Will put together for job-seeking purposes (it worked). The captions under some of the photos are what in journalism are called cutlines: "A cutline is the caption near a photograph in a newspaper. It informs the reader of who, what, when, where, and why or how about the photograph. Because photographs depict events frozen in time, the first sentence of a cutline is always written in the present tense." The photographer usually writes the cutline which may or may not end up in the printed version after editor review.

These are photos Will took in the course of his job(s). There are a lot more where these came from - I just picked out some of my favorites (yes, I have a lot of favorites). The captions are the names Will assigned to the photos to keep them organized.
